In my paintings I explore the language of colour and design, building on the vital process of looking and drawing. I take risks with the paint,
building layers of colour adjustment until I feel I have achieved a level of harmony – an intuitive process – just seeing where the paint takes me.
Some paintings might work relatively quickly if I am lucky – others may take a long time to resolve. It’s an ongoing process. 01580 765817 Email
Originally from Sussex, Chris has his family roots in Norfolk, and spent many of his early years there. Following a degree course in Fine Art at
Leeds in the seventies he held a number of teaching posts. He now gains inspiration wherever there is tide and human activity, and the coastlines
of Sussex, East Anglia and the West Country will always remain important sources of ideas. The work begins with lively colour studies made ‘on
the spot’, and developed during further visits, or in the studio. Chris works exclusively in oils, working the colour in layers to achieve a animated
surface which glows in the shadows and in reflected light. His subjects range from coastal and garden landscapes to still lifes and interiors,
building the paintings on a strong feeling for colour and design. Chris, a full time painter since 2001, has shown work at the Royal Academy
Summer Show, the Rye Society of Artists, the Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Show, and the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Show,
both at the Mall Galleries in London.
